Power BI tutorial: learn with practical examples

Power BI Tutorial: Get data from SQL, Excel, CSV, Web and Facebook, integrate everything into your model, create stunning DAX calculations and analytical reports.

I created a new video «Power BI tutorial: learn with practical examples» that I want to share with you.

Power BI tutorial

As usual, this Power BI video tutorial is in Spanish.

If you want to take it a step further, with this book you will learn Power BI and how to apply all the fundamentals, techniques and methods that we took for granted in the video tutorial. Plus, it includes over 90 pages so you can create a complete case study larger than the one you just saw. Power BI tutorials and mastery:

«Power BI Tutorial» – Find out how we work professionally

So that you have a clear idea of what’s inside the video and based on this decide whether you are interested in watching it, I will tell you its content in detail.

The first part focuses on obtaining data from various sources, here is a list of the ones I used:

  • From Excel, import a Date table
If you are a regular reader of my blog you already know its importance, otherwise I recommend you read The definitive guide to the time dimension in a data warehouse, which I wrote previously
  • SQL Server database, tables with product and sales data.
Sales are in two tables, header row and detail row, which we integrate so that they arrive as a single table in the data model
  • From a CSV file, SubFamilies.csv
  • From Excel, Families.xlsx
The Product table of the model is made up of data from: SQL Product table, subamilias.csv file and families.xlsx file
  • From the site, data on inhabitants by province of Spain, with a process of cleaning unnecessary elements

As usual, I have to do a series of DAX calculations to get the reports that answer the Business questions I asked myself, including “calculations compared to the previous month”, “calculations compared to the same month of the year above”, “calculations of the differences between these periods” (both net and as a percentage).

These DAX calculations greatly facilitate our analysis.

DAX calculations, reports and analysis

Finally, I created a series of reports that allow us to answer a series of business questions about sales that we asked ourselves. Between them:

  • Sales analysis
  • Compliance with sales targets
  • Monthly sales evolution
  • Sales increase/decrease compared to the previous month
  • Hierarchical navigation (year-month-day) for sales in a period
  • Filtered by stores and product families
  • Analysis of benefits by Product Subfamilies

Let’s remember that these are very basic analyses, which I carried out on the fly, the aim of which was to show the ease with which the entire process takes place, from obtaining the data to creating the reports, passing through all the intermediate steps (transformation and delivery) in the «Data Model» and the creation of analytical calculations with DAX).

I’d better show you in detail in this video tutorial (it’s the same as above):

Video summary

We have created a complete case, consisting of the following steps:

  • Obtain data from different sources (SQL, CSV, Excel…)
  • Data integration in the same “Data Model”
  • Analytical enrichment using DAX calculations
  • Creation of reports and analysis of information
