In this article I want to show you that having a BI solution in the cloud or in your own company, with a good architecture and the technologies offered by Microsoft, becomes a secondary matter. Create independent areas that allow each element to be where you want it and, what’s more, in the future you can upload it to the cloud or download it to your facilities depending on your needs.
“Power BI” is today the most read and searched word when it comes to Business Intelligence and Analytics solutions with Microsoft technologies.
In fact, most of what we read and see refers to “Power Bi in the cloud.”
In fact, we are no longer talking about the bulk of the platform that has been on the market for many years, which continues to evolve at an excellent pace and, moreover, incorporates much of the technology included in Power BI. We no longer talk about the BI services included in SQL Server.

Power BI It is the fashionable word, which we also associate with “the cloud”, the one we all use because it is the well-known one????
When you don’t go into detail and don’t have sufficient knowledge, both of architecture and technology, everything gets confusing and big doubts arise:
- Can I have the data on my servers?
- Do I have to go through cloud services?
- Is it safe to upload them to the “cloud”?
- I can’t use Power BI because it’s a cloud service
- If I have the infrastructure in my company, do I need to hire cloud services to use Power BI?
…And many other questions that start from not knowing the details of the various architectures and the tools/technologies to be used in them.
Of all the questions, I will only answer the third one here: is it safe to upload them to the “cloud”? The answer is yes. Also, I won’t go into technical details, there is a lot of information about it. The problem is that there are many companies that have regulations that do not allow them to work in the cloud. And on the other hand it will be necessary to evaluate case by case whether it is the best solution or not.

- The data: some will be in the cloud and some in your company
- The information: I recommend you have a Data Warehouse, which can be in the cloud or in your company. You will also have an analytical layer, which can also be partly in the cloud and partly in your company.
- The analytics: Decide if it’s in the cloud and/or in your company. Don’t forget that your users need to have access anytime, anywhere, so they can log in even from outside your company
REMEMBER! There are many more possibilities than there appear to be a priori. Furthermore, if you implement a solution based on SQL Server and Power BI, it is not a problem to decide which elements of your Business Intelligence and Analytics architecture should be in the cloud and which elements should be in your company. Changing any of them will not be traumatic, if you have a good design and good implementation.
The important thing is to design an architecture that allows you to be flexible and change your mind at any time, being able to move any part of your structures to the cloud and vice versa.
